Can Automatic Riveting Machines Use Rivets of Any Specification? Compatibility and Selection - BISUDI
Can automatic riveting machines use rivets of any specification? Compatibility spec and selection notes
You cannot simply assume one automatic riveting machine can handle every rivet. The channel (feed tube), nail-separation mechanism, nozzle and pulling force of an automatic riveting machine are all designed around a specific rivet specification; if the spec gap is too large, jamming, incomplete feeding or unbroken mandrels occur. This article explains the compatibility boundary and the correct way to support multiple specifications.
I. Four specification parameters that determine compatibility
| Parameter | Symptom When Mismatched | Corresponding Configuration |
|---|---|---|
| Head diameter (rivet head diameter) | Jamming, rivet head unable to seat | Nozzle and nail-separation disc specification |
| Shank diameter (mandrel diameter) | Feeding jams or flips over | Channel inner diameter and guide structure |
| Rivet length | Sorting disorder, incomplete feeding | Channel length and nail-separation cycle |
| Material/pulling-force need | Mandrel won't break or rivet is loose | Cylinder pulling-force grade (common about 12,800N, larger customizable) |
II. Common processable range
Standard models usually cover the small-to-mid blind rivet specs most used in the chassis/cabinet, sheet-metal and home-appliance industries; aluminum and iron rivets have the best compatibility, while stainless and structural rivets need a higher pulling-force configuration due to their high force requirement. Rivet nuts use a dedicated automatic rivet nut gun, commonly covering specs such as M3-M12, and are not interchangeable with riveting machines. The exact processable range must be based on testing with actual rivet samples, and BISUDI does not advise verbally promising "everything works" without samples.

III. How to handle multi-specification production
Similar specifications:Changing the nozzle and adjusting channel parameters is enough for compatibility, with a short changeover time, suiting multi-variety small-batch production.
Larger spec span:Use a multi-channel design (one main unit feeding multiple channels) or equip multiple guns, switched by specification.
Completely different types:Blind rivets and rivet nuts require an automatic riveting machine and an automatic rivet nut gun respectively; a robot workstation can run multiple processes via gun changes, but this is project-based integration.
IV. Selection recommendations
Step one, organize a complete list of rivet specifications in use and planned, marking material and usage; step two, set the main-unit configuration by the highest-usage specification while considering compatibility with secondary specs; step three, send samples or book an on-site trial so every main specification runs continuous sampling, verifying the jam rate and riveting quality. Electronic chassis, power cabinets, home appliances and kitchen/bath industries have many rivet specs and frequent changeovers, so it is recommended to include changeover time in the trial assessment.
V. Common fastener types and corresponding equipment
| Fastener Type | Process Feature | Corresponding Equipment |
|---|---|---|
| Blind rivet (pull rivet) | Single-side riveting, blind-mandrel fastening, most used in chassis/cabinet sheet metal | Automatic riveting machine / automatic rivet gun |
| Rivet nut (pull rivet nut) | Forms an internal thread on thin plate for later screw assembly | Automatic rivet nut gun |
| Structural rivet | High clamping force and reliability, common in automotive/new energy | High-pulling-force custom model |
| Ring-groove rivet, etc. | High-strength anti-vibration connection | Dedicated model, sample-based assessment required |
Different fasteners have different feeding, clamping and pull-riveting principles, and equipment is generally not interchangeable. When inquiring, first state whether you use "pull rivet (blind rivet)" or "rivet nut", then give the specification parameters, to avoid a wrong selection direction. Automotive parts plants use rivet nuts heavily; seeNew Energy Vehicle Parts Riveting Case。
If you cannot confirm the rivet specification for now, the safest way is to send 10-20 sample rivets of each type and 1-2 typical workpieces to the factory; the engineer measures the head diameter, shank diameter and length on the physical parts, runs continuous sampling, and gives a clear conclusion of "standard machine can cover / custom channel needed / higher pulling force needed", avoiding experience-based misjudgment. After sample testing the rivets can be returned as-is or kept for later first-article comparison in production.
Spec Compatibility FAQ
Compatibility FAQ
Over-long or over-short rivets increase sorting difficulty and require custom channels and nail-separation mechanisms; the solution can be confirmed after sample verification, and some extreme specs may require a dedicated model.
Stainless rivets have a high pulling-force requirement and demand high gun-body strength; leave a pulling-force margin in selection and focus on verifying continuous-operation stability.
Similar specs only need a nozzle change; for larger differences a channel can be added or a gun body added, and BISUDI nozzles and other wear parts are supplied long term at cost.
Mixing is generally not recommended as the two have different gun heads and processes; a robot workstation can run multiple processes via gun changes, but it is a project-based solution, and ordinary lines generally configure an automatic riveting machine and an automatic rivet nut gun separately.
