Application of Automatic Rivet Nut Guns in Sheet Metal Processing: Process Coordination Points - BISUDI
Sheet metal processing is one of the fields with the largest pull rivet nut usage. Thin-plate parts such as cabinets, door panels, mounting plates and home appliance shells later rely on screws to assemble door hinges, guide rails, shelves and accessories, so durable internal threads must be made on 1-3mm plates. Automatic rivet nut guns were created to solve exactly this problem; this article explains their application position in the sheet metal process and the coordination points.
I. Three pain points of sheet metal threaded connections
Weak thin-plate tapping:When the plate is too thin there are only two or three thread teeth, and the screw strips with slight force and cannot be repeatedly assembled/disassembled;Welded nut defects:Spot-welded nuts carry risks of thermal deformation, weld spatter, false welding and burn-through, and also damage the finished surface treatment;Unreachable backside:Hands cannot reach inside boxes, square tubes and closed cavities to place a nut or bucking bar. Pull rivet nuts offer single-side construction, cold-deformation forming and post-painting assembly, solving all three problems at once.
II. Typical sheet metal application workpieces
| Field | Typical Workpiece | Commonly Used Nuts |
|---|---|---|
| Server/communication chassis and cabinets | Door panel hinges, internal mounting plates, guide rail fixing | M4-M6 flat/countersunk head, stainless or steel |
| Power/control cabinets | Cabinet frames, mounting beams, door panels, grounding parts | M5-M8 hexagonal anti-slip type |
| Home appliance, kitchen and bath | Microwave ovens, air conditioners, range hood shells and brackets | M3-M6 flat-head aluminum/steel |
| Aluminum veneer/curtain wall | Aluminum veneer back hangers, stiffener fixing | Aluminum or stainless knurled type to prevent galvanic corrosion |
| Elevator/display equipment | Car parts, square tube frames, display racks | M4-M8 blind/through hole |
III. Sheet metal process coordination points
Pull rivet nut quality is already decided at the sheet metal blanking stage: first,pre-drilled holes, with hole diameter machined per the nut specification table - round holes for cylindrical nuts, hexagonal holes for hexagonal nuts; too large means loose, too small means it will not insert; second, hole edge distance and hole spacing, leaving forming space from bend edges and plate edges to avoid the bulge pushing the edge; third, bend tolerance, the mating faces of two stacked pieces should be flush, as excessive gap with forced riveting causes looseness; fourth, surface treatment sequence, paint/powder-coat first and rivet nuts afterward as much as possible to avoid coating clogging the threaded holes, and choose countersunk nuts on appearance surfaces to stay flush.
IV. From manual to automatic: the upgrade path for sheet metal workshops
Multi-variety small-batch sheet metal shops find pneumatic semi-automatic rivet nut guns flexible with low investment; for products with fixed points and large batches such as door panels and mounting plates, after adding auto-feed rivet nut guns workers are freed from nut picking, screwing and reversing actions, with clearly improved cycle and consistency; dedicated lines such as server cabinets and automotive parts can further go to fixed or robot cells. Sheet Metal Application FAQ
Sheet Metal Application FAQ
There are corresponding small-specification and thin-type rivet nuts, but hole diameter and pulling force must be tightly controlled; it is recommended to send plate-thickness coupons for trial riveting to confirm, avoiding the bulge penetrating the plate surface.
Aluminum-to-steel contact in humid environments may cause galvanic corrosion; for curtain walls and outdoor aluminum veneers it is recommended to choose aluminum or stainless nuts and apply corresponding treatment.
After drilling out the old nut it generally cannot be redone in the same hole; where the process allows, relocate and re-drill, or repair with an enlarged specification; the positioning fixture must be confirmed on the first article for key appearance surfaces.
Yes, the manufacturer serves nationwide, bringing matched models to sample on-site with the customer's sheet metal parts, measuring cycle and thread pass rate.

V. Four steps of sheet metal workshop automation retrofit
Step one, statistics: list nut specifications, points per piece, monthly output and current riveting station headcount for all products, finding the product with the most points and largest batch; step two, trial: have the manufacturer bring automatic rivet nut guns to sample on-site with real sheet metal parts, recording single-rivet time, per-piece work time, thread pass rate and worker feedback; step three, pilot: put one device on a dedicated door panel or mounting plate line first, run a full month of orders, and calculate the real changes in labor and defects; step four, rollout: copy the verified cycle and fixture solutions to similar stations, and fix nut specifications and hole diameter standards into the sheet metal process card to ensure consistency from the blanking stage. Multi-variety small-batch should first consolidate specifications (reduce the number of M sizes), then choose handheld auto-feed guns with quick changeover; fixed dedicated lines are better suited to products with stable specifications and large batches, and there is no need to reach the end in one step.
